Eagles Fly Free Empty Eagles Fly Free

    Post by Helldawg66

With a +25 turnover differential due to an outstanding 42 interceptions by a dominating defense, and an offensive showing this season worthy of the Chip Kelly hype, the Philadelphia Eagles have become a prime candidate to be this year's NFC representative for the MEFL Super Bowl championship. With a high-octane offense scoring an NFC-best 36.9 points per game bolstered by a fierce rushing attack led by MVP candidate LeSean McCoy, the Eagles came just one win shy of an undefeated regular season in Chip Kelly's first year as a head coach. Kelly is the rightful favorite to win the AP Coach of the Year award despite a field of strong candidates such as Rex Ryan and former Eagles coach Andy Reid, but this season has not always been as easy as the stat sheet might suggest.

Despite glowing individual numbers for several stars, this season was ultimately not without controversy. Following a mediocre 2012 season, Michael Vick was forced to compete to keep his job, and ultimately won out despite multiple rumors circulating about his personal life that may have affected his preseason performances. Numerous rumors suggested that he may have become too involved in the blockbuster film “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, which would have distracted him from his offseason duties. Instead the only hobbit he was really connected to turned out to be Kim Kardashian. It is still unclear even at this point in the season if North West's true father is in fact Yeezy, the musical genius, or perhaps Mr. Ron Mexico himself. Vick rebounded strongly this year with 32 total touchdowns, 501 rushing yards, and a near 2:1 TD-INT ratio.

LeSean McCoy, the team's leading MVP candidate, had a spectacular season with franchise records in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, with 1,934 and 23 respectively. Though LeSean didn't find himself in any offseason controversy a la Michael Vick, he dealt with increased pressure and expectations mid-season due to running mate Bryce Brown suffering from a shoulder tear and missing 9 weeks. Bryce Brown finished the season with a 7.8 YPC, and close to 600 yards in the games that he did play, but Shady McCoy's dominance made sure that the team didn't miss any production from the former Kansas State star.

On the defensive side of the ball, several players such as potential Rookie of the Year finalist Earl Wolff, free agent acquisition Patrick Chung, and Eagles mainstay Trent Cole all had great years, but the one player who stood out the most was former Texans second round pick Connor Barwin.

Brought in to ease the transition on defense for the team as they switched schemes from a 4-3 to a 3-4 this year, Barwin was absolutely dominant and a Defensive Player of the Year favorite throughout the season. Instead of just easing the transition on defense, Barwin became a leader and helped to establish a defense that was brutal against the run, and very unforgiving against the pass. His aggressiveness as a rush defender saw him place second on the team with 12 tackles for a loss, but it was his pass defense that really stood out. His 9 interceptions were second amongst all linebackers in an unusually high year for picks, but he still led linebackers of the outside position. Where he made his real mark though was in what he did with those picks. 4 of Barwin's 9 interceptions were returned for touchdowns, including one taken 77 yards to the house. Only Aqib Talib had more defensive touchdowns, as the Patriots' top corner led the league with 5 touchdowns, and with 13 total interceptions.

Of course, aside from the “Desolation of Ron” controversy, injury woes, and the worry of a new defense, no year would be complete without a full media circus. Former Florida Gator standout Riley Cooper, in his 3rd year with the team, ignited a firestorm of controversy due to his racially charged comments while drunk at a Kenny Chesney concert. The incident was caught on video, and Cooper seemingly cooled things over with an apology and brief time away from the team. However, after his apology, Cooper was found on Twitter making more disparaging and racially charged remarks on his Twitter account, which potentially could have caused major friction with the team. After his well-publicized pre-season fight with cb Carey Williams, and building tension with other black players such as DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and Michael Vick, Cooper sounded off once again.

After calling out his teammates, he somehow was not cut by the team, but was suspended for 4 games during the preseason due to conduct detrimental to the team, entered into alcohol rehab, lost his potential starting spot, AND according to several reports, will likely be gone if the Eagles can find a good blocking receiver in the upcoming NFL draft. Chip Kelly took a huge risk in retaining Cooper, but Cooper's blocking ability ended up helping the dynamic Eagles rushing attack.

The 15-1 Eagles enter the postseason as heavy favorites to win at all, and have held a steady presence at the top of MEFL power rankings. Through Chip Kelly's play calling wizardry, and the outstanding performances of many key players, the Eagles, as the number one seed, sit in pole position as the quest to win the franchise's first championship since 1960 is about to be underway.

Rumors indicate eagles will retain cooper as a publicity stunt like in 2009 with the signing of Mike Vick to a 1 year contract. Cooper will fill his role as a mainly blocking receiver.
