Bengals vs Bills

Post by Helldawg66

was asked to watch Bengals/Bills game due to offensive and defensive playcalling by Bills [trevaluv]

Watched whole game

out of 48 plays [26 passes attempted, 3 pass plays Bengals were sacked, and 19 total team rushing attempts] called by the Bengals on offense [26 pass attempts, 22 rush attempts] Bills did not match personnel on majority. If we're being generous and counting 3-4 bear as matching personnel for 2 and 3 wr sets this still applies.

18 manually selected QUARTER DEFENSE [7 dbacks] called against 3 wr sets.
1 DOLLAR called against 3 wr sets
7 manually selected DIME Defense [6 dbacks] called against 3 wr sets.
2 manually selected DIME defense [6 dbacks] called against 2 wr sets....really?

28 of 48 plays manually selected by Bills did not match personnel. Plus the 4 that I noticed as coach selections that also did not match

There were 3 instances I noticed involving a coach selection defense calling dime when it didn't match personnel, and another 1 instance where quarters was coach selected where it didn't. They are not included above.

so 32 of 48 plays didn't match personnel. 3-4 Bear isn't included in this because it technically does match for 2 or 3 wrs because there's a safety replacing a linebacker so there's an extra db but he's in the box.

On offense I was asked about hb toss plays. most were coach suggestions but several were not. 10 of 27 rb rushes were hb toss/toss crack out of the same 2 formations. the rest were powers, inside zones, isos, draws so I don't think there's an issue here because there's variation. Just wanted to put this because it was brought up to me. However, Tyrod Taylor's long rushing td was a snap and run which we occasionally enforce as a banned play, there was a wide receiver on the cross route open over the middle on the play that was ignored. Other qb runs were legitimate scrambles though.

I didn't log the pass plays but the overwhelming majority seemed to have a drag or slant concept involved even if they weren't the primary concept. If they didn't they were likely a coach suggested z spot play. a few screens and verts.

28 manually selected defensive plays not matching personnel on 48 play calls is a bit ridiculous. Eiffert is not even as good as Jason Witten let alone the Jimmy Graham/Rob Gronkowski level of tightend. If anything he's closer to Larry Donnell and Heath Miller....Eiffert has good catch attributes and jump but [86 cth, 85 cit, 87 spc, 90 jmp...but his awareness is 62 and his route running is 72...an extra db THAT MUCH is ridiculous.

Bills won game 23-20

Would like to clarify- watched from bills' archive not bengals'. www.twitch.tv/trevaluv site still has hellrazor's twitch. This is why coach suggestion could be accounted for.

18 times he selected quarter defence? That seems like he's spamming a concept or play.

Trev?

Picking apart this seems like overkill to me, if a guy is calling quarter against you on 2nd down and your in 2-3 Wr set just audible to a run play. There are certain instances where you just can't match personal I've played countless games were a guy comes out in singleback 2wr 2te on 3rd and 20 just because he is in 2wr 2te set on a passing down doesn't mean I shouldnt have to call a 4-3 defense so he can roast me on his obvious about to happen play action pass. What I'm getting at is if the guy comes out in quarter on defense a lot you can always take advantage of that by just running the ball...

Your not much of a Eagles fan HD, lol. If you watched the eagles last year they ran nickel and dime almost all game. Nolan Carroll who is a CB was playing LB all game, set didnt matter.

Eventhough that is true Im just busting ur balls.

To me personal matching all depends. 2 wr sets u could go base defense(4-3 example) or even nickel. Some of these TEs are fast so extra DB is better to have. 3 WR sets u can really go any route, base set, nickel, dime, even quarter. It all depends on the oppts players. who is the HB, who is the TE.

Ill be honest u can pretty much call anything these days. People think this is still its 70's and 80's football when its not even close. I mean our team the eagles is a perfect example. U have Ertz, Sproles, Murray, Mathews. Sometimes u have 2 or 3 Hbs on the field. Guys are played all over the place, diff positions etc. Thes guys will need DBs in most cases to defend. Also depends on the DB. Some are the size of LBs. LBs of the 1970's are gone. They are smaller and faster.

So my end view, there really are too many "if's" in todays games with the formations, and the type of players out there on both offense and defense.
